Fractional, Interim or Full-Time CMO? Which One You Actually Need

Three job titles that sound interchangeable and price completely differently. This guide separates them in plain English, puts the UK numbers side by side, and gives you a sixty-second way to work out which shape your firm actually needs.

A fractional CMO works part of the week, indefinitely. An interim CMO works all week, temporarily. A full-time CMO works all week, permanently. Two questions separate them: is the need ongoing, and does it truly fill a working week?

Why the titles blur together

All three do the same job when they are in the room: own the strategy, run the function, answer to the board. Sellers blur the titles further because each label carries a different price tag for similar-sounding work. An interim at £1,200 a day, an agency pitching a "virtual CMO" bolt-on and a fractional operator at £4,800 a month can all appear to be quoting for the same thing. They are not.

What actually differs is the shape of the commitment, and the wrong shape is expensive in both directions. Interim rates for an ongoing part-time need overpay badly. A part-time arrangement where a genuine full-time gap exists leaves the team leaderless four days a week. If you want the full definitions first, read what a fractional CMO is; the numbers behind every option live in the cost guide.

One Picture Instead of Four Definitions

Two Questions Separate All Four Titles

Is the need ongoing, or for a fixed period? And does it genuinely fill a working week? Answer those and the right shape falls out.

Ongoing need

Fixed period

Part of the week

Fractional CMO

Part of the week, ongoing. Senior leadership sized to the firm.

£3,000 to £12,000 a month

Project Consultant

Part of the week, fixed stint. A defined piece of work, then gone.

£5,000 to £30,000 a project

All week

Full-Time CMO

All week, permanent. Right once the function is big enough to fill it.

£140,000+ a year all in

Interim CMO

All week, temporary. Cover for a gap or a defined transformation.

£800 to £1,500 a day

A part-time CMO, an outsourced CMO and a virtual CMO all live in the top-left cell. Different names, same arrangement.

Sixty Seconds, Honest Answer

Which Shape Does Your Firm Need?

Three questions. The recommendation follows the same logic we use on discovery calls, including the answers that point away from us.

1. Where are you starting from?
2. How much senior time is really there?
3. For how long?

Answer the three questions and the recommendation appears here, with the reasoning spelled out.
